Neutrino Backgrounds to Dark Matter Searches and Directionality Citation

چکیده
Neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering cross sections can be as large as 10−39 cm, while current dark matter experiments have sensitivities to WIMP coherent scattering cross sections several orders of magnitude smaller. With large target masses and few keV recoil energy detection thresholds, coherent scattering of solar neutrinos becomes an irreducible background. Directional dark matter detection can discriminate against such backgrounds in a second observable: nuclear recoil angle. The motion of our solar system around the galactic center should produce an apparent dark matter wind. With this signal, directional detection of dark matter can provide an unambiguous observation of dark matter interactions even in the presence of backgrounds, from neutrinos and other sources. The DM-TPC collaboration and others are developing recoil direction-sensitive dark matter detectors with very promising results.

The quest for dark matter with neutrino telescopes∗
There should be not doubt by now that neutrino telescopes are competitive instruments when it comes to searches for dark matter. Their large detector volumes collect hundreds of neutrinos per day. They scrutinize the whole sky continuously, being sensitive to neutrino signals of all flavours from dark matter annihilations in nearby objects (Sun, Earth, Milky Way Center and Halo) as well as from...

متن کاملCosmological gamma ray and neutrino backgrounds due to neutralino dark matter annihilation
We compute the cosmological background radiation of gamma rays and neutrinos due to neutralino annihilation in evolving dark matter halos, assuming the observed dark matter is comprised of thermally excited neutralinos in the MSSM. The spectrum of this gamma-ray background radiation does not show strong annihilation line features, but could amount to a significant fraction of the extragalactic ...
متن کاملUltra-Low-Energy Germanium Detector for Neutrino-Nucleus Coherent Scattering and Dark Matter Searches
The status and plans of a research program on the development of ultra-low-energy germanium detectors with sub-keV sensitivities are reported. We survey the scientific goals which include the observation of neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering, the studies of neutrino magnetic moments, as well as the searches of WIMP dark matter. In particular, a threshold of 100-200 eV and a sub-keV background...
متن کاملAspects of Neutrino Detection of Neutralino Dark Matter
Neutralino dark matter, and in particular different aspects of its detection at neutrino telescopes, has been studied within the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, the MSSM. The relic density of neutralinos has been calculated using sophisticated routines for integrating the annihilation cross section and the Boltzmann equation. As a new element, so called coannihilation pr...
